Who may qualify for SSS sickness benefit?

SSS sickness benefit is a daily cash allowance for a qualified member who cannot work because of sickness or injury and is confined at home or in a hospital for at least four days.

1. Unable to work for at least 4 days The member must be unable to work due to sickness or injury and be confined at home or in a hospital for at least four days.
2. At least 3 qualifying contributions At least three monthly contributions must fall within the 12-month qualifying period used by SSS. For Self-Employed, Voluntary, and OFW members, SSS considers contributions paid before the applicable semester for entitlement.
3. Required notification or application Employees notify their employer. Self-Employed, Voluntary, OFW, Non-Working Spouse, and separated members generally file the sickness benefit application with SSS.
4. Employees generally use current company sick leave first An employed member generally must have used up current company sick leave with pay for the year before SSS sickness benefit applies. Sea-based OFWs are excepted from this rule.

How SSS sickness benefit is computed

  1. Determine the applicable 12-month qualifying contribution period.
  2. Identify the six highest Monthly Salary Credits in those 12 months.
  3. Add the six highest MSCs.
  4. Divide the total by 180 to get the Average Daily Salary Credit (ADSC).
  5. Multiply the ADSC by 90% to get the daily sickness allowance.
  6. Multiply the daily sickness allowance by the approved number of sickness days.
Simple example
Six MSCs of ₱20,000 = ₱120,000 total
₱120,000 ÷ 180 = ₱666.67 ADSC
₱666.67 × 90% = ₱600 daily sickness allowance
₱600 × 10 approved days = ₱6,000 estimated benefit

Why the calculator caps the benefit MSC at ₱20,000

Benefits under the Regular SSS Program are computed using contributions up to a Monthly Salary Credit of ₱20,000. Contributions corresponding to MSC above that level go to the provident fund / pension-booster component and do not increase the Regular SSS sickness-benefit computation.

SSS sickness benefit requirements and documents

The exact documents can depend on the member's situation and medical evaluation, but the basic sickness documents normally start with the following:

SSS Medical Certificate (Med 01688) It should show the complete diagnosis, recommended sick-leave days including recuperation, clinic address, contact number, and the physician's license number written legibly.
Supporting medical records For prolonged confinement or when required, SSS may ask for laboratory results, X-ray, ECG, operating-room records, clinical records, and other diagnostic documents supporting the diagnosis.

If the sickness or injury happened abroad

Foreign-issued medical documents should have an English translation and be duly authenticated by the Philippine Embassy/Consulate or duly notarized by a notary public in the host country, following SSS requirements.

An SSS Medical Specialist may still require additional medical records when needed for evaluation.

How to apply for SSS sickness benefit

If you are employed or a kasambahay

Notify your employer and submit the required proof of illness or injury. The employer submits the sickness notification to SSS through the Employer My.SSS account.

If you are Self-Employed, Voluntary, OFW, NWS, or separated

  1. Log in to your My.SSS account.
  2. Open Benefits and select Sickness Benefit.
  3. Complete the online sickness benefit application.
  4. Upload the required documents.
  5. Review the information and complete the certification.
  6. Submit and save the transaction number. SSS forwards the claim for medical evaluation.

Some cases still require branch filing

SSS identifies certain exceptions to online filing, including a denied claim reconsidered for payment, an unclaimed benefit of a deceased member, and an unclaimed reimbursement of an inactive, closed, terminated, or retired employer.

SSS sickness filing deadlines

Employee — home confinement

The employee generally notifies the employer within five calendar days after the start of confinement. The employer generally notifies SSS within five calendar days after receiving the employee's notice.

Employee — hospital confinement

Employee-to-employer notification is not necessary for hospital confinement. The employer generally has one year from hospital discharge to notify SSS.

SE / VM / OFW — home confinement

The sickness benefit application is generally submitted within five calendar days after the start of home confinement.

SE / VM / OFW — hospital confinement

The sickness benefit application is generally due within one year from hospital discharge.

Employer reimbursement

For home confinement, the employer generally files the reimbursement application within one year from the start of confinement. For hospital confinement, the period is generally one year from hospital discharge.

What happens if the sickness claim is filed late?

Late notification can reduce or cause denial of the claim.

When the five-day notification rule applies and the member notifies SSS late, SSS may treat the confinement as having started no earlier than the fifth day immediately before the date of notification. That can reduce the number of compensable days.

A late case should still be checked against the exact confinement type and filing route because hospital cases and employer reimbursement have different prescriptive periods.

How sickness benefit works for employees

In the normal employee process, the employer advances the approved sickness benefit to the employee and later files a Sickness Benefit Reimbursement Application (SBRA) with SSS.

Important: confirm receipt of the advance payment

When SSS sends the confirmation email, the employee generally has 7 working days to confirm or certify receipt of the employer's advance payment through the email link or My.SSS. If the employee confirms non-receipt or does not act within the period, the employer's SBRA can be rejected and may need to be filed again as a new transaction.

SSS states that this employee confirmation is not required for claims tagged as separated, AWOL, or deceased.

How SSS sickness benefit is paid

SSS uses enrolled disbursement channels. Depending on the qualified payee and available channel, payment may be made through an eligible UMID ATM card, PESONet participating bank, e-wallet, or accredited remittance/cash payout outlet.

Enroll your disbursement details in DAEM SSS may require proof of account, an accepted government ID, and the required selfie/ account-verification documents for the disbursement account being enrolled.
Check payment status in My.SSS SSS sends email or SMS notifications for credited benefits or available cash-payout payments. The disbursement status may also be viewed through the My.SSS Inquiry Module.
Crediting after settlement SSS states that benefit payments are credited within five banking days from the date of settlement.

If you resigned, were separated, AWOL, or cannot get employer documents

A separated member may still have a sickness-benefit filing route, but the documents depend on when the confinement happened relative to the separation date.

Confinement was during employment or before separation

SSS generally asks for a Certificate of Separation stating the effective separation date and that no advance sickness-benefit payment was granted.

Confinement started after separation

SSS generally asks for a Certificate of Separation showing the effective date of separation.

SSS also lists alternative supporting-document routes when a normal Certificate of Separation cannot be obtained because of a strike, company closure/dissolution, a pending separation case, AWOL, or strained relations with the employer.

Depending on the situation, the alternative may include a notarized Affidavit of Undertaking, DOLE documentation, or other proof required by SSS.

SSS sickness benefit rejected or delayed: what to check

SSS does not publish one short list covering every possible rejection reason. If a claim is rejected, reduced, or delayed, check these rule-based problem areas first:

Less than 4 days of confinement Regular SSS sickness benefit requires at least four days of inability to work/confinement.
Fewer than 3 qualifying contributions Check the exact 12-month qualifying period rather than simply counting recent payments.
Late notification or application Late filing can reduce compensable days or lead to denial when the applicable deadline is missed.
Incomplete or insufficient medical records Check the Medical Certificate details and whether additional diagnostic or clinical records are required.
DAEM or disbursement problem An incorrect, inactive, or incomplete disbursement enrollment can affect payment after approval.
Employee reimbursement confirmation not completed In applicable employee claims, failure to confirm receipt of the employer's advance payment within the SSS confirmation period can cause the employer's SBRA to be rejected.

How many sickness days can SSS pay?

SSS may grant sickness benefit for a maximum of 120 days in one calendar year. Unused compensable days cannot be carried forward to the next year.

Sickness benefit for the same illness is generally limited to 240 days. If the sickness or injury persists after that period, SSS may treat the case as a disability claim.

SSS Sickness Benefit vs Employees' Compensation (EC)

Regular SSS sickness benefit and Employees' Compensation are not the same program. EC is specifically for covered work-related sickness, injury, or death.

If your illness or injury is connected to your work, check the EC rules as well because the qualifying conditions, benefit limits, filing process, and supporting documents are different from the Regular SSS sickness-benefit rules.
